Launching the new TESTEX MICROPLASTIC label, TESTEX sets a higher standard for reducing microplastic emissions from textiles, empowering brands and manufacturers to minimise their environmental footprint.

At the core of the TESTEX MICROPLASTIC label is a commitment to reducing microplastic pollution and helping the textile industry move toward more environmentally responsible practices. Microplastics have become a significant environmental issue, accumulating in oceans and waterways and posing risks to marine life and ecosystems. By reducing microplastic emissions, the textile industry can play a crucial role in mitigating this global challenge.

What is the TESTEX MICROPLASTIC label?

The TESTEX MICROPLASTIC label signifies that textiles have undergone rigorous testing to assess and minimise their microplastic emissions. This is achieved through an independent testing procedure developed by TESTEX, using cutting-edge technology to evaluate the release of microplastic particles during the washing of textile products. The testing process includes the analysis of fibres, yarns, woven and knitted fabrics, and even wastewater from textile production processes.

The label is awarded only to textiles that pass a comprehensive series of tests, ensuring that microplastic emissions are kept to a minimum. These tests are conducted in accordance with international standards, including ISO 4484-1:2023 and ISO 4484-2:2023. With a strong focus on research and development, TESTEX continues to refine its methodologies to stay ahead of emerging regulations and environmental concerns.

How does the analysis technique work?

For the analysis, the textile samples are washed and the wash water is collected and filtered. The fibres and particles washed out of the textile sample or the waste / production water from the textile manufacturing process are directly analysed on the filter. TESTEX uses a Laser Direct Infrared (LDIR) Imaging System with the latest generation of quantum cascade lasers (QCL) to analyse the release of particles. This measurement technology allows the determination of number of particles, morphology (shape & appearance), distribution & dimensions, and the type of polymer.

Why the TESTEX MICROPLASTIC label matters

As environmental regulations tighten, particularly in Europe, the TESTEX MICROPLASTIC label helps manufacturers demonstrate their commitment to sustainability. It provides them with detailed data on the types and amounts of microplastic particles released, allowing for targeted improvements in textile design and production. This label not only supports environmental goals but also appeals to increasingly eco-conscious consumers who prioritise products with reduced environmental impact.

Key benefits of the TESTEX MICROPLASTIC label include:

    • Microplastic Emission Control: Products undergo testing to assess and minimise the release of microplastic particles.
    • Transparency: Manufacturers receive detailed reports on particle size, type, and quantity, providing insights for product improvements.
    • Sustainability Leadership: Brands, retailers and manufacturers with the TESTEX MICROPLASTIC label demonstrate a proactive approach to environmental sustainability, aligning with global efforts to reduce pollution.

Who is the TESTEX MICROPLASTIC label suitable for?

    • Brands looking to measure and minimise microplastic emissions in their products.
    • Manufacturers seeking to meet stringent sustainability standards and address environmental regulations.
