Majyd Aziz has become new president of the Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) for the next one year after beating independent candidate Zakariya Usman in the annual general election of the Chamber.

Businessmen Group (BMG) Siraj Kasim Teli faction won the Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) annual election with vast majority of votes. Majyd Aziz the candidate of BMG group has been elected as president of KCCI by securing 1565 votes. His opponent Zakaria Usman. An independent candidate secured 405 votes.

Fourteen BMG candidates have been elected on member class seats of managing committee of KCCI. These include M Haroon Agar (secured 1715 votes). Aamir Abdullah Zaki (1733 votes), Altaf Majeed (ST) (1727 votes), Kamran llahi (1716 votes), Ovais Siddik Jaangda (1723 votes), Danish Saeed (1723 votes), Mohammed Usman (1735 votes), Alamgir khokhar (1726 votes), M. Younus Soomro (1729 votes), Arshad Islam (1728 votes),  Mmuzzammil Hausain (1733 votes), Muhammad Idrees (1717 votes), M Iran (1661 votes), and Faysal Khalid (1637 votes).

Two independent candidates were not elected. They were Baikhlaq Hassan Sheikh (249 votes) and Behzad Hassan Sheikh (240 votes), Saboor Ahmed a BMG  candidate has already been elected unopposed as member of managing committee on Town Associaton seat.

Majyd Aziz, newly elected president said in his inaugural address to the 45th Annual General Meeting of the Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry, “We plan to provide service to the members with less bureaucratic roadblocks, with minimal documentation, and with renewed efficiency. Members demand swift action and it is our duty to provide them service and assistance immediately. The stress would now be on a service-oriented structure”.

He added, “We would intensely lobby for the Chamber’s representation on the Boards of KESC, SSGC etc. as we are on the board of KWSB already. The Chamber representation has to be institutionalized on a permanent basis on the board or committee of any organization that deals with the infrastructure of the city or deals with the development of Karachi. The representative should not necessarily be the Chamber President. It is pragmatic to nominate those persons from the membership who have an impressive knowledge of the working of the organization or of the utility, he said.

The Chamber would continue to intervene whenever required to ensure that the infrastructure is provided at rates that are in conformity with the global situation. The cost of doing business is escalating daily and a workable policy must be developed that enables the provision of infrastructure at affordable rates, Majyd added.

The AGM was initially presided over by the out-going President Haroon Farooki and thereafter by Majyd Aziz, newly elected President.

Earlier, at a meeting of Managing Committee held on 23rd September, 2006 A. Abdullah Zaki and Saqib Naseem were elected as senior Vice President and Vice President, respectively. They were inducted into their respective offices at the AGM. The General Body, in addition to confirmation of minutes of last year AGM, adopted the Annual Report, approved the accounts and appointed auditor for the current year 2006-07.
