Ceam Group Seminar 2006
by Dr. H.R. Sheikh, Professor Emeritus, Textile Institute of Pakistan & Hony. Editor, Pakistan Textile Journal
The latest developments in the Italian textile machinery sector were highlighted at technical seminars organised jointly by the CEAM Group International, Pakistan Textile Journal (PTJ) and the Italian Trade Commission. The seminar at Karachi was held on the 19th of September, 2006. Similar seminars were also held at Faisalabad and Lahore on the 20th and 22nd of September, 2006 respectively. The companies who participated in this series of seminars were 1) Temporiti, represented by S. R. Khan & Co. 2) ETV, represented by Textile Engineers of Pakistan 3) Mario Crosta, represented by Al-Ameen Trading Corporation, 4) Salvade represented by Mustex Corporation. 5) Testa, represented by Mustex Corporation and 6) Ramish Guarneri represented by Acmatex Corporation.
CEAM Group Seminar started with an introduction of the CEAM Group and the member presenting companies by Nadeem Mazhar, editor, Pakistan Textile Journal. He mentioned that dissemination of information about latest developments in textile machinery was vital for the textile industry of Pakistan, as technological up-gradation of production requirements is imperative to meet the challenges of the WTO era. In this context the CEAM Group endeavour to hold seminars in Pakistan is a positive step towards that direction.
Mr. Mazhar, thanked the participants for sparing their valuable time in attending the seminar. He said that he was honoured by the presence of Mr. Muhammed Idress, the Textile Commissioner of the Government of Pakistan and Dr. Marco Pintus, the Italian Trade Commissioner. Dr. Marco Pintus was invited to deliver his welcome address which is reported below.
Welcome Address
Dr. Marco Pintus welcomed six companies of the CEAM Group International, Italy and all the distinguished Pakistani guests attending the technical seminar. He also thanked Pakistan Textile Journal for special care in organising this event.
The growing value of trade between our two countries was a source of satisfaction. The Italian exports to Pakistan grew by 35% to 230 million Euros in January-May, 2006 over the same period last year. Similarly, Pakistan exports to Italy grew by 11% to 190 million Euros. Italian exports mainly comprises of machinery, electrical appliances, metal products and chemicals while 70% exports from Pakistan comprises of textile articles such as fabrics, garments, home textiles and yarn.
Globally, Italian textile machinery exports have grown by 7% this year and the share of Pakistani market is also increasing, the current level being 3.7%. However, Italian textile machinery imports in Pakistan last fiscal year dropped by 17% which caused concern to the Italian exporters who were now concentrating on improving post-sale assistance standards as required by prospective Pakistani buyers.
The six Italian companies visiting Pakistan were from an ancient industrial district in Northern Italy where textile expertise and proficiency was built through hard work and entrepreneurship spread over decades. These companies have pooled their expertise into a consortium to speak with one voice in foreign markets and at the same time preserving their individual flexibility and technical specialisation. The textile industry of Pakistan has made huge investment on modernisation, technological upgradation and expansion of its production facilities in order to become more competitive in the international textile export market. In these endeavours it can utilise the source of extraordinary experience and knowledge available with the new Italian consortium of textile machinery manufacturers for improving the quality of its textile and clothing products.
The Italian Trade Commission in Karachi has been active in promoting Italian textile technology over the years by setting up information offices in trade exhibitions in Pakistan and inviting Pakistani managers and technicians to exhibitions and training courses in Italy. We now wish to strengthen our commitment to Pakistani market by increasing our activity. The fact that Pakistan’s economy grew at an average rate of 7% during the last four years augers well for its prosperous future.
It is our firm intention to work hard to bridge information and knowledge gaps and to promote interaction between our business communities to discuss and enhance business prospects.
Address by Mr. M. Idrees Ahmed, the Textile Commissioner
Mr. Mohammed Idrees, the chief guest, addressed the audience. Excerpts from his speach are reported as following:
The information disseminated by the Italian experts pertaining to the latest developments in the Italian textile machinery sector can prove useful to the textile industry of Pakistan and it can gain a lot from the CEAM Group International. Italian textile machinery sales are picking up in Pakistan.

Because of the complete phasing out of quotas textile industries of the developing countries such as Pakistan, India and China are passing through a revolution. The textile and clothing products can now be exported solely on the basis of quality and competitive price. Product development has become very important. The success rate is proportional to performance. The Government of Pakistan (GoP) is providing support in areas neglected in the past e.g. skill development, quality and value-addition.
Textile industry is very important and is the major economic sector of Pakistan. It contributes up-to 66%in foreign exchange earnings and 46% of employment. It has in-built competence for conventional products. In order to meet the challenges of the WTO era, the industry has invested during the last 5 years about $6.0 billion on modernization and technological upgradation of its production facilities creating 5,000 new jobs in the process. GoP is encouraging private/public partnership and garment cities are being set up in Karachi, Lahore and Faisalabad and a textile city also in Karachi to promote the manufacture and export of Value-added textile products,
Mr. M. Idrees Ahmed concluded his address by requesting the Italian experts representing their respective companies of the CEAM Group International to convey his message to the Italian entrepreneurs to enter into partnership with the local Pakistani industrialists and locate textile mills in garment-textile cities and export processing zones in Pakistan.

Mr. Marco Salvade said, “Sample steamers are manufactured in 1 to 7 metre and 1.8 to metre sizes. Process parameters are optimized on the sample steamers before textiles are steamed on production machines. Fabrics are steamed in loops. Chains are used for moving the fabrics and temperature is precisely controlled by a new system developed recently. Pigment printed fabrics can also be steamed.”

Tensionless Dryer AMW with single / double pass facility is another Salvade machine. One such machine is working in ‘Nakhsbandi Industries’ in Karachi for drying terry towels.
The machine is equipped with special ventilation device to control shrinkage. With high capacity Dryer Mach 5, Two kinds of fabrics can be cycled in the Tumbler at the same time and consequently production is doubled.
Mr. Marco Salvadè said, “ the new “MACH 5” Tumbler is suitable for all fabric types thanks to its versatility and the possibility of regulating fan speed and thus the kind of tumbler effect on the fabric itself. As final result, and naturally according to the type of fabric, the extremely high fabric transport speed and the vibration induced by the special transport blower (PATENTED), give a soft, bulky feel, dimensional stability, ageing effect, bouclé raising and volume to sponge and chenille fabrics”.

The machine is compact and modular, split into perfectly identical 2.2 metre sections. Each section has a fan mounted co-axially with a 45 kW inverter controlled motor.
“It is a high technology machine designed and built using the best materials available on the market. As heat source it can use steam batteries, diathermic oil systems or, alternatively, gas burners. It can be used free-standing or in line with other Salvadè machines, like the air-vibration dryers or miller, to increase production capacity. Its constructional simplicity and ease of operation put the MACH 5 in a class of its own,” concluded Mr. Salvade in his presentation.
