Protections to outworkers requested (Australia)
Federal Government will be requested by the Workplace Relations Ministry to act on the recommendations of providing adequate protections to the outworkers; said Kevin Andrews, the Workplace Relations Minister.
After it came to know that government proposed a legislation of independent contractors; the committee suggested these measures will reduce the safety measures of workers working in textile, clothing and footwear sectors.
Andrews said that Government’s intension was to safeguard the interests of outworkers and thus committee has recommended omission of a clause that looked contrary to Government’s intention.
The enquiry has found out that workers in textile, clothing and footwear sectors were the most unguarded against dishonest employers as these workers are most likely to face abuse and exploitation than any other working group.
