Technology Mission on technical
textiles
The Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh, has called upon the Textile Industry to
look far into the future and invest for the coming two decades and not for the
next season.
He emphasised that the textile sector must graduate from being low cost, low
value supplier to high volume, high value supplier. Side by side, it must also
develop internationally known brands and labels with global footprint and global
ambitions. The Prime Minister said this while addressing the concluding session
of the two-day Tex Summit.
Dr. Manmohan Singh assured that the Government would pay the closest attention
to the recommendations of the four working groups to devise appropriate
strategies to further promote the growth and competitiveness of the textile
sector. He said that he would direct the Ministries of Finance, Commerce and
Textiles as well as the National Manufacturing Competitiveness Council to sit
together and find out a durable, productive and pragmatic solution to the
problems of the textile industry.
Recognizing the strategic role of textile sector in industrial economy, the
Prime Minister said that this sector could act as a vehicle for nationwide
industrial modernisation and revitalisation of traditional skills and designs.
