International Fabric Show

25-27 March 2003, Hong Kong Convention & Exhibition Centre
Gulf war and health concerns causes drop in number of buyers at the fair - nonetheless almost 7,000 buyers are counted on-site.
Exhibitors say they expected fewer buyers, but are pleased that business is still being done.

A stunning trend forum by the Nelly Rodi Agency (Paris) adds colour and class to the exhibition hall.

In Hong Kong last week there was much speculation as to how the war in Iraq and the outbreak of SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome) would affect Interstoff Asia Spring, Asia's leading trade show for apparel fabrics and trends, and one of the biggest events on the annual fabric buying calendar.

"Because of the critical buying period for garment fabrics, the fair went ahead as planned," said Ms Katy Lam, General Manager of Messe Frankfurt (HK) Ltd and person responsible for Interstoff Asia. "There was never any question that the fair wouldn't go ahead; too many people rely upon it for sourcing and marketing their new collections," she added.

With 266 exhibitors covering 9,000 square metres, the show ran for three days, from 25-27 March at the Hong Kong Convention & Exhibition Centre. Traffic to the booths, though lighter than usual, remained constant over the whole fair period. Exhibitors reported seeing fewer people overall, but many were pleased that the buying intention and determination to do business was not diminished amongst the buyers who had come to the show.

"Our agents have received solid orders from around 10% of the visitors to their stands," said Ms JW Doh of Hyosung Corporation, Korea, present for the first time at Interstoff Asia to promote their new brand "Creora", with an impressively designed stand, covering 360 square metres. "They have all been busy on their booths," she said.

"The show has been very much better than we expected, given the SARS outbreak," said Srichan Assakul of Bangkok Weaving Mills of Thailand. "We have had many visitors to our stand - some from as far away as Spain, and also many Hong Kong-based buyers sourcing for European manufacturers. The people who we have seen are serious about buying."

At final count, 6,966 buyers from 52 countries had visited the show, marking an approximate 25% drop from Spring 2002. Of these 6,966 buyers, 23% were from overseas, and 77% were from Hong Kong.

"Considering the circumstances in which the show took place, we are very pleased with the outcome," said Katy Lam. "Our exhibitors were fully prepared for the show to be quiet - they knew in advance the factors that might keep the buyers away. However, during our conversations with them, we learnt that despite the noticeable decrease in numbers, business was still being done. The worst-case scenario simply did not happen."

"We are in a very lucky position in Hong Kong. Many of the world's leading garment-makers have buyers based here, so even though fewer people were flying in from overseas, their companies were still represented by their Hong Kong agents. All the top names we usually see at the show were here," adds Lam.

Giving weight to Lam's statement, the list of market-leading manufacturers and retailers that were noted entering the show was as impressive as ever.

Designer labels Burberry, Calvin Klein, Donna Karan, Karen Millen, Perry Ellis, Phillips Van Heusen, Polo Ralph Lauren, Sergio Tacchini and Tommy Hilfiger all sent buyers to the show, and many high-street retailers such as Abecrombie & Fitch, Banana Republic, Bossini, Coach, Esprit, French Connection, G2000, Gap, Guess, Isetan, Itokin, Jusco, Kookai, Levi Strauss, Marks & Spencer, and Seibu were present.
The sportswear fabrics on display attracted market leaders such as Adidas, Columbia Sportswear, Mooks and Skechers.

The feature pavilion for bodywear fabrics

Around 30 exhibitors joined the feature pavilion for bodywear fabrics, which highlighted fabrics that are worn close to the skin such as lingerie, nightwear, fitness and dancewear and swimwear fabrics.

Johnson Lace Co. of Taiwan, an exhibitor in the bodywear fabrics pavilion, was pleased with their results at the fair. "Hong Kong is an excellent location to expand our customer base, as there are many US buying offices set up here," said Ms. Emmy Lin, a manager with Johnson Lace. "With the current outbreak of pneumonia in Hong Kong and the war in Iraq, we were expecting it to be quiet, but it's not! The show has far exceeded our expectations."

Buyers from Bonds, Jockey International, Sara Lee, The Berlei Group, Triumph, Victoria's Secret, and Wacoal Corp. all took advantage of the new collections in the special bodywear fabrics pavilion.

Trend information

A stunning trend forum, designed by Nelly Rodi Agency of France, elegantly illustrated the three key trends identified for Spring/Summer 2004 by the Directions trend team.

The trends were also presented in a special seminar hosted by Nelly Rodi, exploring the key colours, fabrics and garments that will shape next summer's wardrobes.

Seminars & product presentations

The buyers' appetite for knowledge was apparently not dampened, and - as in the past - the seminars which took place in tandem with the fair were a huge hit, with hundreds of attendees eager to hear the latest developments in trade, trends and technology from the expert speakers panel.

Highlights of the programme included:

The Asian launch of "Ingeo"TM, the world's first man-made fibre from 100% annually renewable resources, presented by top executives from the fibre's producer, Cargill Dow Luobuma - "The King of Natural Fibres" - an ancient health fabric rediscovered. Exploring properties of this brand new material which has emerged from the depths of the Taklamakan Desert in China's remote north-west region of Xinjiang "India's textile industry today: meeting global challenges head-on", presented by Creatnet Services.

"Despite global affairs we found the Interstoff Asia exhibition and seminars contributed dramatically to the success of Ingeo Fibers introduction into the East Asian market," said Mr. Tim Eynon, General Manager of Ingeo Fibers. "Not just the quantity but also the quality of the visitors to Interstoff Asia exceeded our expectations. Ingeo is now firmly established in this market with major business initiatives, this could not have been achieved as quickly or thoroughly, without the support of Messe Frankfurt and the Interstoff Asia show."

A special post-event service for exhibitors

In light of the unusual circumstances surrounding the fair, the organisers of Interstoff Asia will offer a one-time, post-event service to all exhibitors to complement their marketing activities. All buyers registered with Interstoff Asia through previous attendance at the fair (some 60,000 contacts around the world) will be sent a complimentary copy of the fair guide by e-mail or post, detailing company names, contact details and product descriptions of all exhibitors that were present at the Spring 2003 show - giving exhibitors substantial additional exposure in the marketplace.

The next Interstoff Asia will run from 7-9 October 2003 at the Hong Kong Convention & Exhibition Centre.
